The U.S. patent system was designed for a specific purpose. It was designed to give the individual the right to own an invention, just like an author has the right to own a book, and it's there for an incentive. What that does is it incentivizes incredible risk-taking by thousands of inventors around the country all trying to do incredible things. Very few inventors make it, but the ones that do, change the world.
